In industry, it is integrated into weighing systems to monitor the contents of silos, tanks, hoppers and vessels, and to control industrial processes such as dosing, filling and mixing in real time.

This article explains what a load cell is, how it works, what types exist and, above all, how storage equipment should be designed so the weighing system operates accurately.

What is a load cell?

A load cell is a transducer: it converts a mechanical force into a measurable electrical signal. That signal, processed by an indicator or a control system, is translated into a weight reading.

Load cell, weighing cell and weight sensor: are they the same thing?

Load cell and weighing cell refer to the same component; load cell is the term most widely used in Spanish legal metrology standards. Weight sensor is a broader term covering different measurement technologies. This article treats load cell and weighing cell as synonyms, without separate content for either variant.

How does a load cell work?

The load cell deforms minimally and in proportion to the force applied. That deformation is measured using strain gauges bonded to the metal body of the sensor, usually connected in a Wheatstone bridge. The bridge converts the change in electrical resistance into a signal proportional to the weight, which an indicator or a control system converts into a weight reading.

Components of an industrial weighing system

A complete weighing system is not just the load cell. The following table sets out each element and its function.

Element

Function

Load cell

Converts force or weight into an electrical signal

Weighing module

Integrates the cell with supports, plates and mounting fittings

Junction box

Combines the signals from several cells into a single reading

Indicator or transmitter

Converts the signal into a weight reading

Control system (PLC)

Uses the weight data for inventory, dosing or alarms

Equipment structure

Transmits the load to the measuring points

Main types of load cells

Not all cell types are suited to industrial storage equipment. These are the most relevant for silos, tanks and vessels.

Compression and column

These are the most common in silos, vessels and large-capacity equipment resting on legs or supports. Column or pendulum types are used for high loads, typical of weighing systems for large-volume tanks or silos.

Shear and bending

Shear cells are used in platforms and hoppers; bending cells, in lower-capacity equipment.

Tension

These are used in suspended vessels or hanging equipment, where the force acts by tension.

Digital

These simplify diagnostics, data transmission and integration with automation and quality control systems.

How load cells are integrated into silos and vessels

The total weight of the equipment is calculated by adding up the readings of all the cells distributed under its supports. The number, location and size of the cells depend on the geometry of the vessel and its centre of gravity. The principle is the same as an industrial scale, applied on a larger scale to a steel structure.

Weighing a silo, a hopper and a vessel is not the same: a silo stores bulk product and its weight varies with compaction; a hopper directs the discharge to the next stage of the process and requires more dynamic readings; a liquid vessel requires the effect of rigid pipe connections on the measurement to be taken into account.

At Eurocalder we manufacture silos with an integrated weighing system, with the cells positioned from the equipment design stage, and we apply the same approach to the construction of industrial silos and vessels and tanks requiring inventory control.

Several factors affect measurement accuracy: thermal expansion of the structure, lateral forces transmitted by rigid pipework connected to the vessel, vibration produced by agitators or ancillary equipment, the effect of wind on outdoor installations, and the levelling of the supports and the distribution of the load between them.

A pipe connection that is too rigid can introduce horizontal forces that affect the system’s reading. That is why the mechanical integration must be resolved from the design stage of the process equipment, not added afterwards to an already-built structure.

Industrial applications of load cell weighing

Inventory control in silos and vessels.

Batch dosing and fill control.

Discharge verification and overfill prevention.

Product formulation and mixing.

Process control in reactors.

Batch traceability and production line automation.

How to choose a load cell or weighing system

Criterion

What to check

Capacity

Empty weight of the equipment and maximum weight of the stored product

Load distribution

Number of supports and planned weight distribution

Accuracy

Required accuracy and margin against overloads

Environmental conditions

Temperature, humidity and outdoor exposure

Atmosphere

Possible presence of an explosive atmosphere (ATEX)

Protection rating

IP rating against dust and water

Signal and integration

Analogue or digital output and compatibility with PLC or SCADA

Calibration, accuracy and common errors

Accuracy, precision and repeatability are not synonyms: they describe different aspects of a load cell’s behaviour. Periodic calibration corrects sensor drift over time. The most common errors include off-centre loading, damaged cables, humidity, momentary overload and poorly levelled supports. The reliability of the system depends as much on the quality of the cell as on the structure that supports it.

Regulations applicable to weighing systems

Spanish regulations define the load cell as a transducer that converts the measured mass into a proportional signal, and classify cell types according to their mode of application: tension, compression, bending and universal. The OIML R60 recommendation is the international reference for legal metrology for load cells when the weight is used in commercial transactions. In environments with a risk of explosive atmosphere, the system must be compatible with the applicable ATEX requirements.

Certifications or accuracy classes should not be attributed to a specific piece of equipment without prior validation from the technical department.

Weighing systems integrated into Eurocalder equipment

At Eurocalder we design and integrate weighing systems using load cells directly into the structure of the equipment: we define the supports and mounting modules from the engineering stage, adapt the system to the capacity and the stored product, and ensure compatibility with the client’s industrial control system. We apply this integration work both to weighing silos and to other custom-built storage and process equipment.

Do you need a silo or vessel with an integrated weighing system? Request technical information about your project.

Frequently asked questions

What is a load cell?

It is a sensor that converts a force or a weight into a proportional electrical signal. It is installed under the supports of a piece of equipment and, together with an indicator or a control system, makes it possible to know the weight of the stored contents. It is the central component of any industrial weighing system in silos, tanks or vessels.

What is the difference between a load cell and a weighing cell?

None in practice: they are two ways of naming the same sensor. Load cell is the term used in Spanish legal metrology standards; weighing cell is a variant widely used in commercial and technical settings. Both terms refer to the same force transducer.

What type of load cell is used in a silo?

Silos resting on legs or supports usually use compression or column cells, capable of withstanding high loads and distributing the weight across several support points. The exact choice depends on the capacity of the silo, the number of supports and the environmental conditions of the installation.

How do pipes affect the weighing of a tank?

A pipe rigidly connected to the tank can transmit horizontal or vertical forces that affect the weight reading. That is why it is advisable to fit flexible connections or expansion joints that absorb thermal expansion and structural movement, preventing the pipe from interfering with the system’s measurement.

How often should a weighing system be calibrated?

There is no single frequency: it depends on usage, the accuracy required and the applicable regulations, especially when the weight is used in commercial transactions. As a general guideline, the system should be calibrated at least once a year, or whenever deviations, damaged cables or changes to the support structure are detected.

Summary

A load cell converts a force into an electrical signal using strain gauges and a Wheatstone bridge.

Load cell and weighing cell are the same sensor, not two different products.

A complete industrial weighing system includes a cell, a module, a junction box, an indicator and a control system.

Accuracy depends as much on the sensor as on the structure of the equipment: pipework, thermal expansion and vibration affect the measurement if they are not addressed in the design.

At Eurocalder we integrate weighing systems using load cells from the design stage of silos and storage equipment.

A load cell is a sensor that converts the weight or force applied into a proportional electrical signal.
