For it to work, a good detergent or an automatic programme is not enough: the equipment must be designed, from the design stage, so that the cleaning solution reaches every surface and drains completely without stopping production for longer than necessary.

This article explains what CIP cleaning is, how it differs from COP and SIP, how a cycle works and, above all, what a vessel or reactor’s design needs to include so it can be cleaned effectively.

What is CIP cleaning?

CIP stands for Cleaning in Place. It is a procedure for cleaning the inside of a piece of equipment by circulating water and cleaning solutions through it, without needing to dismantle parts or manually access the internal surfaces. The CIP process can be repeated several times a day depending on the production line and the product being processed.

Cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation: CIP versus SIP

Cleaning is the removal of product residues, fats, proteins or scale. Disinfection is the reduction of micro-organisms to a level acceptable for the process. Sterilisation requires a higher level of control and is usually referred to as SIP (Sterilisation in Place) when carried out without dismantling the equipment. A CIP cycle can include cleaning and disinfection, but CIP does not automatically mean sterilisation: the sequence required depends on the sector, the product and the risk involved in the process.

CIP, COP and SIP: differences

System

Meaning

Application

CIP

Cleaning in Place

Interior cleaning without dismantling the equipment

COP

Cleaning out of Place

Parts removed and cleaned at a separate station

SIP

Sterilisation in Place

Sterilisation of the equipment without dismantling

Manual cleaning

–

External surfaces or areas not set up for CIP

Not every enclosed piece of equipment is automatically suitable for CIP: some parts may need to be dismantled and cleaned using COP, and the same piece of equipment may need a combination of all three systems.

How a CIP cleaning system works

The effectiveness of a cycle depends on four classic factors – time, temperature, chemical action and mechanical action – known as the Sinner circle. At Eurocalder we add a fifth condition, just as decisive as the others: coverage. A cycle can have the right temperature, concentration and time and still prove ineffective if there are spray shadows, poorly positioned nozzles, dead zones or bottoms that do not drain.

Stages of a CIP cycle

The indicative sequence – not a universal recipe, since it depends on the product and the sector – usually includes: emptying or recovering the product, a pre-rinse with recovered water or mains water, alkaline washing, an intermediate rinse, acid washing when necessary, disinfection, a final rinse and removal of residues by draining the equipment.

The cleaning products, temperatures, use concentrations and times for each stage should not be set as universal values: they depend on the product, the equipment material, the detergent and the microbiological risk of the process.

Components and types of CIP systems

A CIP installation combines vessels for water and cleaning solutions, supply and return pumps, a heating system or heat exchanger, chemical dosing, valves, a network of pipework, spray devices, sensors and a PLC that runs and logs the sequence.

The amount of water and solution it handles depends on the number of vessels and the scope of the installation. Depending on mobility, it can be fixed or portable; depending on scope, centralised or decentralised; and depending on recovery, once-through or with water and detergent recovery. The choice depends on the number of items of equipment, the distance between them and the washing frequency.

Hygienic vessel design: the factor that determines whether CIP works

The effectiveness of a CIP cycle does not depend only on the detergent or the automatic programme: it depends on how the equipment to be cleaned has been designed and manufactured.

Drainability and dead zones

The equipment must be emptied completely between stages to avoid stagnant water, dilution of the next product or microbial growth. Dead zones – connections, branches or volumes where the solution does not circulate with enough intensity – are one of the most common causes of poor cleaning, even when the cycle runs correctly.

Welds and surface finish

Irregular weld beads, pores, cracks or ledges trap product and make cleaning harder, as does an interior finish that is too rough. A well-manufactured vessel avoids both problems at the welding stage, not through the wash programme.

Internal fittings, gaskets and connections

Agitators, coils, probes and supports can create cleaning shadows if they are not positioned correctly. Gaskets must be compatible with the temperature, the product and the detergents used, and connections must allow the solution to circulate without pockets.

Parameters to control and how cleaning is validated

A CIP cycle logs variables such as temperature, flow rate, pressure, conductivity and time, confirming that the cycle has run as intended. That is verification. Validation is different: it is the documented demonstration that the process repeatably produces the required hygienic outcome, through visual inspection, microbiological sampling or analysis of the rinse water. The riboflavin test checks the coverage of the spray device, but on its own it does not demonstrate the microbiological cleanliness of the equipment.

Common problems in a CIP system

Problem

Possible causes

Product residues after the cycle

Insufficient coverage or inadequate time/chemistry

Areas that remain dirty

Shadows, internal fittings or a poorly positioned device

Excessive water consumption

Unoptimised rinses or lack of recovery

Excessive cleaning time

Oversized cycles or low efficiency

Cross-contamination

Poorly designed valves, returns or sequences

Several of these problems – bottoms without a slope, nozzles that create dead volumes, irregular interior welds – are equipment design failures, not failures of the cleaning programme.

CIP cleaning by equipment type and sector

A storage vessel, or storage tanks in general, depend mainly on their geometry and drainage. A reactor or fermenter adds difficulty because of agitators, coils and probes. A heat exchanger requires attention to narrow channels and scale. A pipework network depends on velocity, turbulence and diameter.

Requirements also vary by sector: the food and beverage industry prioritises food safety and product changeovers; pharmaceutical and cosmetics requires repeatability and documentation; and chemicals and industrial processes add material compatibility and effluent control.

What equipment needs to be ready for CIP cleaning

Before integrating a vessel, reactor or fermenter into a CIP circuit, it is worth checking: whether all contact surfaces receive solution, whether the equipment drains properly, whether there are dead spots, whether the interior welds are hygienic, whether the gaskets are compatible with the chemicals used, and whether coverage can be verified.

The safety of the cycle also depends on the design: interlocks, status signalling and pump protection prevent spills, accidental mixing or dry running during cleaning.

Design and manufacture of equipment ready for CIP cleaning

At Eurocalder we design and manufacture vessels and tanks, reactors, fermenters and heat exchangers, taking drainability, interior finish and connection positioning into account from the engineering stage, as well as CIP systems and pipework networks integrated with the rest of the production process. Good hygienic design also reduces water, energy and detergent consumption in each cycle, and results in less line downtime by avoiding extra rinses to compensate for poorly designed areas.

Do you need a vessel or piece of equipment designed to be cleaned effectively using CIP? Request technical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is CIP cleaning?

It is a cleaning method that circulates water and detergent solutions through the inside of vessels, pipework and process equipment without needing to dismantle them. The acronym comes from the English term Cleaning in Place. It is used particularly in industries where equipment is cleaned frequently between batches or product changeovers.

What is the difference between CIP and SIP?

CIP cleans the equipment without dismantling it, while SIP (Sterilisation in Place) also sterilises it without dismantling, with a higher level of microbiological control. A CIP cycle does not imply sterilisation: when the process requires it, an additional SIP stage is added, defined according to the risk and the regulations of the sector.

What is the difference between CIP and COP?

CIP cleans the equipment in its usual position, without dismantling parts. COP (Cleaning out of Place) requires the components to be removed and cleaned at a separate station. Many pieces of equipment combine both systems: the main body is cleaned by CIP, and certain removable parts by COP.

Why can areas inside a tank remain uncleaned?

This is usually caused by spray shadows, poorly positioned nozzles, internal fittings that block the flow of the solution, or bottoms that do not drain completely. These problems depend on the design of the vessel, not just the cleaning programme, so fixing them means reviewing the geometry and the positioning of the internal fittings.

Can every vessel incorporate CIP cleaning?

Not automatically. A vessel must be designed with drainability, interior finish, connection positioning and the absence of dead zones in mind. A piece of equipment with irregular welds, badly sloped bottoms or poorly positioned internal fittings can be difficult to clean even when a CIP system is connected to it.

Summary

CIP cleaning allows equipment to be cleaned without dismantling it, but it is not automatically the same as disinfection or sterilisation (SIP).

CIP, COP and SIP address different needs, and many pieces of equipment combine all three.

An effective cycle depends on time, temperature, chemical action, mechanical action and the coverage of every surface.

The vessel’s drainability, welds and internal fittings affect cleaning just as much as the CIP cycle itself.

Verifying that the cycle ran according to the parameters is not the same as validating the hygienic outcome.

The CIP cleaning (Cleaning in Place) process, also known as in-place cleaning, allows the inside of vessels, pipework and process equipment to be cleaned without dismantling them.
