ISO 9001 certification in industry: what it accredits and how it applies to manufacturing

ISO 9001 certification in industry: what it accredits and how it applies to manufacturing

ISO 9001 certification confirms that a company applies a quality management system in line with the ISO 9001:2015 standard. It does not certify each individual vessel, reactor or silo manufactured: it certifies the processes the company uses to review requirements, design, purchase, manufacture, inspect, deliver and improve its industrial equipment.

A client ordering custom equipment needs to know what this certificate guarantees before signing an order. This article explains what the standard accredits, who grants it, how it applies to the design and manufacture of industrial equipment, and how it differs from technical construction codes.

What is ISO 9001 certification?

ISO 9001 is an international standard that sets out the requirements for implementing, maintaining and improving a quality management system. Certification is the independent verification that an organisation meets those requirements. The standard is voluntary: no law requires an industrial manufacturer to become certified.

ISO 9001:2015 is the edition published and in force as of July 2026. ISO plans to publish a revision of the standard. The Spanish Association for Standardisation (AENOR) points to September 2026 as the estimated date for the new edition. Until the official publication and confirmation of the transition period, ISO 9001:2015 remains the applicable reference.

Quality objectives and continuous improvement strategy

The standard requires setting measurable quality objectives, aligned with the company’s strategy, and applying rigorous risk management to every project. Top management is responsible for defining these objectives and for maintaining sound document management across the whole structure of the system. The continuous improvement cycle reviews indicators, corrects deviations and reinforces the pursuit of excellence in every industrial project. Client focus and the importance of meeting their technical requirements guide this planning.

A management system, not a product certification

The standard assesses how the company manages its processes, not the technical outcome of each part manufactured. A certified manufacturer documents its responsibilities, controls its operations and records its nonconformities. Certification does not replace the tests, inspections or manufacturing codes that define the technical quality of a vessel or a reactor.

What exactly does the ISO 9001 standard certify?

Certification shows that the company manages its industrial processes systematically. It does not show that two vessels manufactured at the same plant are identical to each other.

ISO 9001 accredits ISO 9001 does not accredit on its own
The company’s quality management system Each piece of equipment manufactured individually
The systematic management of processes and responsibilities The total absence of defects
Document control and the traceability of decisions Compliance with a specific technical code
The handling of nonconformities and continuous improvement CE marking of the equipment
The evaluation of suppliers and materials The certification of a specific weld or material

Who grants ISO 9001 certification?

Three different parties are involved in the process.

ISO, the certification body and the accreditation body

ISO develops and publishes the ISO 9001 standard, but it does not certify companies directly. Certification is granted by an independent certification body, which audits the quality management system and checks that it meets the requirements set out in the standard.
In turn, these certification bodies may be accredited by a national accreditation body responsible for verifying their competence and impartiality.

Obtaining certification means that the quality procedures defined by the company must be applied and documented in the different phases of the work being carried out.

Manufacturing, inspection and traceability

During manufacturing, the system defines the inspection points, non-destructive testing and welding records. This control applies equally to industrial reactors, industrial silos and heat exchangers, regardless of each item’s construction code.

Assembly and delivery at the client’s facilities

The standard also requires controlling work carried out away from the plant. The manufacturing, transport and assembly service is subject to the same system of records and responsibilities as workshop manufacturing.

Stages of the ISO 9001 certification process

A company follows a defined process before obtaining the certificate. During the implementation stage, staff training is completed and control processes are documented:

  1. Defining the scope and analysing the current system.
  2. Implementing processes, controls and documentation.
  3. Internal audit and management review.
  4. External Stage 1 audit, focused on documentation.
  5. External Stage 2 audit, focused on actual implementation.
  6. Resolving any nonconformities identified.
  7. Issuing of the certificate by the certification body.

After issuance, the certification body carries out annual surveillance audits and a recertification audit, usually every three years.

How to check an ISO 9001 certificate

Before hiring a manufacturer, it is worth checking the exact details of the certificate.

Item What to check
Holder Exact certified company name
Standard and edition ISO 9001:2015 or another current edition
Scope Specific activities covered by the certificate
Sites included Certified factories or offices
Certification body and accreditation Issuing body and the body that accredits it
Validity Issue date and expiry date

Scope is the detail that gets overlooked most often: a company holding ISO 9001 does not mean that all of its plants or activities are covered by the certificate. The ISO 9001 quality certificate should always be checked before signing a contract with a new supplier or subcontractor.

ISO 9001 and technical manufacturing regulations

ISO 9001 and construction codes serve different, complementary purposes.

ISO 9001 and CE marking

CE marking certifies that a piece of equipment complies with a specific EU directive, such as the Pressure Equipment Directive. ISO 9001 certifies the management system of the company that manufactures it. No ISO 9001 certificate replaces CE marking where it is required.

Integrated system: ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001

Many industrial manufacturers integrate three standards: ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental management and ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety. An integrated system manages these three areas with shared processes, audits and records.

Benefits of an ISO 9001-certified quality system for industrial clients

A certified quality management system offers real advantages in sectors where the equipment is part of a continuous production process, which also applies to assembly and maintenance services: food and beverage, chemicals and process, pharmaceutical, paper and pulp, water treatment and energy.

  • Documented review of technical requirements before manufacturing.
  • Full traceability of materials and design changes.
  • Planned inspection control during manufacturing.
  • Formal management of complaints and follow-up of maintenance and warranty after commissioning.
  • Records available for supplier qualification processes and tenders.
  • Systematic monitoring of client satisfaction, with documented information available for audits.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to hold ISO 9001 certification?

It means that a certification body has audited and confirmed that the company manages its processes in accordance with the ISO 9001:2015 standard. It accredits the quality management system, not each product manufactured. The company must maintain this conformity through annual surveillance audits and periodic recertification with the certification body.

What is needed to obtain ISO 9001 certification?

It is necessary to define the scope of the system, implement documented processes, train staff and pass a two-stage external audit. The first stage reviews the documentation; the second checks actual implementation within the organisation. After resolving any nonconformities identified, the certification body issues the certificate.

Is ISO 9001 certification mandatory?

No. ISO 9001 is a voluntary standard; no law requires certification to manufacture industrial equipment. Many B2B clients request it as a commercial requirement in tenders, bids and supplier qualification processes, especially in sectors such as food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and energy.

What is ISO 9001 certification?

It is the independent verification, carried out by an accredited certification body, that a company’s quality management system meets the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard. It covers the context of the organisation, leadership, planning, resources, operations, performance evaluation and continuous improvement.

What is the difference between certification and accreditation?

Certification is issued by a certification body after auditing a company’s management system. Accreditation is granted by a national body – ENAC in Spain – which assesses the technical competence and impartiality of that certification body. A company is certified; a certification body is accredited.

Summary

  • ISO 9001 certifies the company’s quality management system, not each item of equipment manufactured individually.
  • ISO, the certification body and the accreditation body each play a different role in the process.
  • The standard applies to design, purchasing of materials, manufacturing, assembly and after-sales service.
  • ISO 9001 does not replace CE marking or technical construction codes such as API 650, ASME VIII or EN 13445.
  • The certificate should be checked for its scope, validity and certification body before hiring a manufacturer.
